Peter Schmalenbach´s Gee Bee

Already in June 2006 we were able to perform the first flight-test of the SLS-60-200 prototype. At that time Peter Schmalenbach visited us with his model, which was equipped with a PREDATOR 30/8 from Plettenberg. Peter actually wrote an article for the AUFWIND and searched for a suitable controller for his ambitious goal, to apply 12 electrical horsepower to the propeller of his aircraft.

We spent the morning to calibrate the motor on the SLS at the test-bench and to built everything into the machine. In the afternoon we drove together to a nearby model airfield, where we had to build up the model first ...

... and after the obligatory range test ...

... we started flying ...

Because the first test was performed with the SLS-60, we first decided to set the parameters safely. (that means slow ramp and more defensive current-, RPM- and temperature limits). It did not surprise us, when Peter said after landing, the SLS takes gas very slow ;-) ... but better safe than sorry: our first SLS-60 had to survive the first day and even more Peters beautiful Gee Bee!

After the battery recharged and the flight data was analyzed (we were able to record everything with a trace buffer of the new SLS-60 hardware) we knew right away, that a bit more dynamics in the motor would not hurt, without leaving the safe ground. A steeper RPM ramp and extra motor-current finally convinced Peter, that the SLS has potential ... OK, the under voltage derating still needs more improvements ;-) ...
